China, but the first modern vaccine was discovered by Edward Jenner in 1796 from cowpox material to stop the spread of smallpox. The word vaccine comes from Jenner’s discovery, as vacca in Latin means cow. This is relevant to my paper because it tells the history of vaccines and where they and the word comes from, expanding one's understanding of the issues with the topic. This is a credible source because it is a .org website that gives accurate historical information.

This source states that some common vaccines that are administered today are for Chickenpox, Diphtheria, Flu, Hepatitis A and B, Hib, HPV related cancers, Measles, Meningococcal Disease, Mumps, Polio, Pneumococcal, Rotavirus, Rubella, Tetanitus, and Whooping Cough. This is relevant because this site provides all of the known and used vaccines today and throughout history. This source helps one understand what vaccines are doing and with which specific diseases. This is a credible source because the CDC is a government agency.

This source says that vaccines are “90-99% effective in preventing disease.”This is relevant to the argument that vaccines are safe and should be mandatory for all children in the United States. This is a credible source because it is a .org website and the American Academy of Pediatrics is a legitimate company.

This source says that, “In the twentieth century, there were 16,316 deaths from polio and 29,004 deaths from smallpox yearly in the United States; in 2012, there were no reported cases of polio or smallpox.” This is relevant to my paper because it proves the point that vaccines are nothing but helpful in completely eradicating diseases that were once as common as the cold. This is a credible resource because the CDC is a government agency.

Ellen Clayton, MD, JD, Professor of Pediatrics and Law at Vanderbilt Law School and co-author of the 2011 IOM report "Committee to Review Adverse Effects of Vaccines," summarized the results of the report: "The MMR vaccine does not cause autism… The MMR and DTaP do not cause Type 1 diabetes. And the killed flu vaccine does not cause Bell’s palsy, and it does not trigger episodes of asthma." This is relevant to my paper because it proves that vaccines do not cause diseases such as diabetes, autism, and asthma. This is a credible source because NPR is a legitimate news site.

Ron Paul, MD, former US Representative (R-TX), in an Oct. 19, 2011 article, "Government Vaccines – Bad Policy, Bad Medicine," stated, "intimately personal medical decisions should not be made by government… Freedom over one’s physical person is the most basic freedom of all, and people in a free society should be sovereign over their own bodies. When we give government the power to make medical decisions for us, we in essence accept that the state owns our bodies.” This helps defend the con side of my argument, stating that the government shouldn’t have the right to control what their citizens do or do not put in their bodies. This is a credible source because it is an article by someone with a medical degree.

Mayo Clinic states that natural infection "often provides more complete immunity than a series of vaccinations." This statement from Mayo Clinic, a trusted and medically accurate hospital and place of research, states that most of the time, it is better to naturally fight of diseases.

This source says, “Some physicians believe thimerosal, an organic mercury compound found in trace amounts in one flu vaccine for children and other vaccines for adults, is linked to autism.” This is relevant to my paper because it proves that some medical professionals are not for mandatory vaccines for health risk reasons. This is a credible source because Dr. Sears is a medical doctor.
